President's Welcome Message

Welcome to all new and returning parents and athletes. We hope that all of you will have enjoyable and rewarding experiences this year. With the completion of last year’s resurfacing and renovations, we are proud to host track meets which offer all track and field events. Please take note of the following information.

Please circle June 11-12 on your calendar; these are the dates of the Cheetah Meet that we are responsible for running as a group. We are pleased to announce that our meet will also act as the Western Canada Games Trial Meet. Many of our athletes will compete in this age group (16 to 21) and will attempt to win a spot on the BC team. We require at least one parent from each family to volunteer each day but are hopeful that both parents will be available. A sign-up board and parent meeting will be set up one month before the meet. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and it is imperative that everyone does his or her part to make it a success.

Additionally, we will be hosting the Provincial Championships in 2011 and in 2012 for Midget, Youth, Junior and Senior Athletes. This year’s championship will be held July 15-17. We are thrilled to provide our athletes the opportunity to compete in front of family and friends on their home track!

The date of this year’s BC Junior Development Track and Field Championships and Pentathlon Championships have yet to be determined. We will need some volunteers at each of these meets, but the time commitment is not as great as our meet because we share duties with other clubs. We are also always looking for volunteers in other areas such as coaching, fund raising, etc. The club is only as strong as its members; and parent participation is vital to our success!

The main outdoor training sessions run from the beginning of April to the end of July. We encourage parents to stay, watch, learn and help, but if you must leave, make sure you are back before practice ends to pick up your child. Sometimes practices end early due to inclement weather - please talk to the coaches on bad weather days to get an accurate ending time.

It is very important that you convey to your young children not to leave the track complex by themselves. They must wait for you. If they have any concerns have them approach any one of our coaches for help. It would be a good idea for your children to carry contact phone numbers in their training bag.

Track and field meets can be overwhelming and confusing to new members. Don’t worry, we will help you. Ask lots of questions; talk to parents that have been through it already. We are a friendly group that is always willing to assist. Check the bulletin board for updates every time you are down at the track, check this website often, and talk to coaches or executive members.

Have a great season.
