President's Welcome Message

April, 2012

Welcome to all new and returning parents and athletes. We hope that all of you will have enjoyable and rewarding experiences this year. Please take note of the following information.

Please circle June 9-10 on your calendar; these are the dates of the Cheetah Meet that we are responsible for running as a group. We require at least one parent from each family to volunteer each day but are hopeful that both parents will be available. We will be running a traditional two day meet – it is a lot of work, but tremendously rewarding. A signup board and parent meeting will be set up one month before the meet. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and it is imperative that everyone does his or her part to make it a success.

Additionally, we will be hosting the Provincial Championships again in 2012 for Midget, Youth, Junior and Senior Athletes. This year’s championship will be held July 13-15. We are thrilled to provide our athletes the opportunity to compete in front of family and friends on their home track! We will need volunteers to help with this meet.

This year, the BC Junior Development Pentathlon Championships will be held on June 23 2012, and will be hosted by Ocean Athletics at the South Surrey Athletics Facility. The BC Junior Development Track & Field Championships will be hosted this year by the Kajaks Track & Field Club from July 27-29, 2012. We will need some volunteers at each of these meets, but the time commitment is not as great as our meet because we share duties with other clubs. We are also always looking for volunteers in other areas such as coaching, fundraising, etc. The club is only as strong as its members; and parent participation is vital to our success!

The main outdoor training sessions run from the beginning of April to the end of July. We encourage parents to stay, watch, learn and help, but if you must leave, make sure you are back before practice ends to pick up your child. Sometimes practices end early due to inclement weather - please talk to the coaches on bad weather days to get an accurate ending time.

It is very important that you convey to your young children not to leave the track complex by themselves. They must wait for you. If they have any concerns have them approach any one of our coaches for help. It would be a good idea for your children to carry contact phone numbers in their training bag.

Track and field meets can be overwhelming and confusing to new members. Don’t worry, we will help you. Ask lots of questions; talk to parents that have been through it already. We are a friendly group that is always willing to assist. Check the bulletin board for updates every time you are down at the track, check this website often, and talk to coaches or executive members.

Have a great season!
