Willcox Narrowly Misses Breaking BC Junior Shot Put Record

Tom Willcox of the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track and Field Club launched a huge personal best throw of 17.17 metres in the Shot Put event at the Kamloops Centennial Track and Field Meet on May 22.

Willcox has recently returned from his first year at the University of Memphis where his season was unfortunately cut short by a stress fracture injury. Willcox, showing no ill effects of the injury, dominated the event and came within 20 centimetres of the BC record set by Jeffrey Wallis (17.37) in 2002.

Willcox was last year’s BC High School Athlete of the Meet award winner and the BC Junior champion. Willcox’s next meet will be on his home field at the Jessie Bent Memorial Meet on June 12 and 13 where he will attempt to break the record and also qualify for the World Junior Track and Field Championships which take place in Moncton, New Brunswick on July 16-25. His event at the Jessie Bent Memorial Meet takes place at 3pm on June 13 at Percy Perry Stadium.

Cheetahs Win 16 Medals at Fraser Valley High School Championships

The Fraser Valley Track and Field Championships were held this past week in Abbotsford. Cheetah athletes were competing for their respective high schools and performed wonderfully. Hodson Harding led the charge by winning the Junior 100m (11.37) and 400m (50.11) and narrowly missing the sprint sweep when he was edged out in the 200m (23.08) by his Cheetah teammate Nathan George (23.01). Nathan also won three medals by finishing second to Hodson in both the 100m (11.54) and 400m(51.99). Hodson ran a personal best in all three events and Nathan had personal bests in the 100m and 200m. Esinam Ayesu-Attah continued the medal charge in the sprints by winning the Junior 100m (12.68) and finishing second in the 200m (26.95). These athletes are continuing the long tradition of Cheetah excellence in sprinting. Ten of the 12 Fraser Valley Championships sprint records are held by Cheetah athletes.

Lawrence Viola also came home with three medals. He ran second in both the Junior 1500m (4:22.32) and 3000m (9:45.75) and was third in a personal best in the 800m (2:06.87).
