Annual Cheetah Banquet Details -- Please RSVP by November 15th

This year's Cheetah Banquet will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the Dogwood Pavilion (Mike Butler Room), 624 Poirier Street. Doors will open at 6:30pm with dinner and awards at 7:00pm.

All athletes registered in 2013 prior to July 31st and coaches are free of charge. The cost for parents, friends, and family is $30 per person.

If you would like to attend, please email Paul Self (pself@sd38.bc.ca) with the following information:
  • Total number of people in your group attending 
  • Of that total, how many are coaches or athletes (no charge) 
  • How many are paying parents, friends, and family (@ $30 each)

Cross Country Practices Completed for the Season

With the BC Championship being run on Saturday, October 26th, our cross country practices are now completed for the year.

Base Training Begins October 16th For Athletes Born in 2000 or Older

Base training begins for those born in 2000 and older on October 16th at 5pm at Percy Perry Stadium. Practices will be held Monday and Wednesdays at 5pm and Saturdays at 10am. If you have any questions, please call Tara at 604 464 0753. See you soon!

JD Crests Submissions Due September 15th

For athletes (age 9-14) please email a list of their best time/distance for each event for the 2013 track season to Paul Self at pself@sd38.bc.ca by September 15 (example 100m 15.35, Long Jump 4.53m, etc). The club needs to apply to BC Athletics for the Junior Development (JD) crest awards (Gold, Silver, Bronze) which will be awarded at the Cheetah banquet in November. If you have any questions, please call Paul at 604-464-0753.

Nathan George leads Canada to a Bronze Medal and Canadian Record in the 4x400m Relay

George ran the lead off leg for the Canadian Junior 4x400m relay at the PanAm Games in Medellin, Columbia.

Brandon McBride of Windsor, Ont., Christopher Green of Kitchener, Ont., and Jordan Sherwood of Cambridge, Ont. teamed up with George and clocked in at 3:07.61, a new pending Canadian record. The old record had stood for 29 years. Nathan was the Canadian Junior Silver Medalist at 400m this year and also the British Columbia Junior Champion at 200m and 400m.

Cross Country Practices Begin September 7th

Cross Country practices will begin Saturday, September 7th at 10:00am in Mundy Park. We meet in the parking lot at Mariner and Chilko. Practice will last one hour. Athletes in Grade 8 and up need a watch with a functional stopwatch.

Practices for all ages are:
  • Tuesdays 4:15pm-5:15pm 
  • Saturdays 10:00am-11:00am
All practices will be at Mundy Park as described above.

The JD cross country racing schedule begins with the Pinetree Classic in Mundy Park on Saturday, September 21.

Cheetah Junior Men Sweep the Medals in the 200m at the BC Track and Field Championships in Kamloops

Nathan George, Chad Payne, and James Linde sprinted to a 1, 2, 3 finish to lead the Cheetahs to a sweep of the medals in the Junior Men’s 200m.
 
Cheetah athletes won 21 medals at the Provincial Championships which included eight Provincial Champions! Nathan George, Benjamin Ayesu-Attah, and, Phillip Rockerbie were all double gold medalists. Liza Whitehead, Esinam Ayesu-Attah, Nicholas Ayin, James Linde, and Chad Payne each won two medals in the 100m and 200m sprints. Anastasia Evans was our final Provincial Champion in the Youth Women’s High Jump. Cheetah athletes secured an amazing 34 top eight performances!

Cheetah Throwers Shine at BC Junior Development Championships in Nanaimo

Cheetah athletes returned home from Nanaimo with 17 medals including 10 Gold. Jarrett Chong led the way by winning all four of the 12 year old boy’s throwing events. Evan Smith won both the 13 year old boy’s Javelin and Discus and had a 2nd place finish in Hammer Throw. Cameron Slaymaker also had an outstanding weekend, winning 3 events and earning medals in 3 other events for 10 year old boys. Amin Shahsavar was our final multiple medalist placing top three in the Shot Put, 100m and Long Jump for 13 year old boys.

BC Provincial Track and Field Championships in Kamloops Day 1

Day One (Friday) at the BC Provincial Track and Field Championships in Kamloops has concluded with three Cheetahs advancing to Saturday's 400m finals. Nathan George won his qualifying heat with Hodson Harding following close behind in second. Trisha Harrison ran a strong race to qualify seventh for tomorrow's Youth Women's Final.

Cheetahs Win Two Silver Medals at Canadian Championships

Congratulations to Ben Ayesu-Attah and Christine Lowe who captured silver medals at the Canadian Championships this weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick.  Ben ran an outstanding final 100m in his 400m race to finish second.  Ben has been named to the Canadian World University Games team which will be competing in Russia in July.  Christine ran a seasonal best time to secure the silver medal in the 400m hurdles.  This is Christine's second medal at Senior Nationals having won the title in 2009 as a 19 year old.  Both Ben and Christine are graduates of the Cheetah Junior Development Program and continue to excel under the tutelage of our head coach, Tara Self.

The BCJD Championships hosted this year by the Vancouver Island Athletic Association and Nanaimo Track and Field Club will be on July 12-14th at the Rotary Bowl Stadium, Nanaimo, BC. Further information about the meet can be found here on the Nanaimo Club's website.

Cheetah Parent Meeting, Wednesday May 29th, 6:15pm

There will be a Cheetah Parent Meeting on Wednesday, May 29 at 6:15. Please have at least one parent present. We will be covering the details of volunteer time on June 8 and 9th. The meeting will be about 20 minutes long.

We host one of the largest meets in BC and our success is dependent on all Cheetah families volunteering.

2013 Junior Olympics: Sign-up Deadline May 9th, 6:30pm

The 2013 Junior Olympics hosted by the South Fraser Track and Field Club will be on May 18/19 at Bear Creek Park, Surrey. Further information about the meet can be found here on South Fraser's website.

Registration (sign-up sheet) is now posted in the equipment shed at Percy Perry Stadium. Entry deadline is 6:30pm, Thursday May 9th. Parents: please note that the club will not register your athlete for this meet after this deadline.

Garry Girdler, 1953-2013

The Cheetah family is greatly saddened by the recent passing of our long term throws coach Garry Girdler.

Garry was an inspirational coach who provided the starting point for many of British Columbia's finest throwers. His skilled coaching and positive attitude will continue to be the standard strived for by all current and future Cheetah coaches. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Girdler family during these difficult times.

Sign-up for Norwester Elementary Meet Deadline is April 25th

Sign-up sheets for the Norwesters Elementary Meet on May 4th-5th (to be held at Swangard Stadium, Burnaby) are now posted in the equipment shed. Entry deadline is Thursday April 25th.

Also, minor updates to the website have been made to align with the Parent Information Manual updates that were included in the manual published at the start of April (changes to FAQ #7 and #9).

Uniform Return, Exchange, and Pick Up

For previous athletes not returning to the Coquitlam Cheetahs this season, they may return their uniforms and have their paid uniform deposit refunded on Thursday April 18th between 5:45pm and 6:30pm at the Equipment Shed at Percy Perry Stadium.

For previous athletes returning to the Coquitlam Cheetahs this season who need to exchange their uniforms for a different size, they may exchange their uniforms on either Thursday April 18th, Tuesday April 23rd, or Thursday April 25th between 5:45pm and 6:30pm at the Equipment Shed at Percy Perry Stadium.

For new athletes joining the Coquitlam Cheetahs this season, they may get their club uniform on either Tuesday April 23rd or Thursday April 25th between 5:45pm and 6:30pm at the Equipment Shed at Percy Perry Stadium. A $100 uniform deposit will be required (which will be returned when the uniform is returned).

The 2013 Parent Information Manual has been posted and is available for parents and athletes to view, print, or download from the Parent Information Manual page.

Spring/Summer Practices Begin, April 3

Practices for those athletes not already training (e.g., JD athletes) will begin on April 3rd at Percy Perry Stadium.

Parent Information Meeting, April 2

Our Parent's Information Meeting will be at 6:15pm on Tuesday, April 2nd. We will be meeting under the covered stands at Percy Perry Stadium.

Parent's are encouraged to attend if they want to learn more about our program(s) or register there athlete for the upcoming season.

Level One Officials Clinic March 9 (Sign Up by March 4)


This is an opportunity to start off the track-and-field season for anyone wanting to become an official or if you just want to learn the rules. It will certainly help club volunteers before hosting your event this season.

This workshop is required for advancement to Level 1 in the National Officials Certification program. Instructors will present organizational information, which prepares novice officials for successful participation and future upgrading. Basic rules and best practices for individual track and field events are presented on site, with an emphasis on Special Olympics adaptations. Handouts will be provided, but participants should come prepared to take notes. The workshop will be held indoors and if weather permits the group will go to Bear Creek Park for venue walk about. Please come prepared with a coat and appropriate foot wear. Dress for comfort and light activity.

Practice Schedule (Athletes 13+)

Following practice this Saturday, and starting Monday, February 11th, the practice schedule for athletes aged 13 years and older will be as follows:
  • February 11th to March 16th:  Mondays and Wednesdays at 5:00pm and Saturdays at 10:00am at Percy Perry Stadium
  • Spring Break: Athletes need to check with Tara
Following Spring Break track practices will run Mondays through Thursdays. Details to follow.

Annual General Meeting: Monday, February 18th

The Coquitlam Cheetahs Annual General meeting will be held on February 18th starting at 7:00pm. The meeting will take place at the Evergreen Cultural Centre (Studio B, 1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam).
 
Athletes and parents are encouraged to attend. Those athletes who have not yet registered can also attend and register for the upcoming season at the end of the AGM.
