Season Winding Down, Thank You to Our Volunteers

Last week was the last week of JD practices for the season and so we begin to wind down for the summer break.

A hearty thank-you to all our coaches for your time and effort at the track this year and to our other volunteers who helped keep the club running. Without your dedication, there would be no club.

There is rumour of the Annual Cheetah Beach Party taking place possibly on August 9th. Please check back in the next few days for further details.

Details regarding Cross Country in September will be posted in the coming weeks.

High Jump - Assistance with Mats Needed

In order to set up the high jump equipment, we need at least 2 parent volunteers to meet at the high jump area this Wednesday and Thursday to assist with pulling out the mats. Final week…
It is a bit much for 1 person to manage without help. We have come close to cancelling a few times over the past several weeks as we progress into summer. With the hot sunny weather it seems that fewer parents are at the track with the kids.

If you are able to help with the mats, please come over to the high jump area around 6:30… we still have the JD athletes training before the provincials… the Midgets and Juniors are pretty much done for the season.

Thanks!!!

Thursday Shot Put

Steve Boylan will not be available Thursday July 20th for shot put practice. But will be in attendance at the JD Championship meet Friday through Sunday.

Any items remaining in the box after Thursday, July 20th, will be donated to Big Brothers.

The tentative schedule for the BC Athletics Championships Jamboree 2017 has been updated and can be found here.

High Jump - Perfecting your flight

A common theme with young jumpers as we try to get them to improve is to ‘get their hips up’ or ‘arch your back more’. We have some jumpers with incredible take off, getting a lot of height - but having some challenge clearing the bar because they are ‘sitting up’ or ‘driving a truck’ while over the bar… Here is a great video outlining some simple exercises to do that will reinforce the right body position while over the bar. Do this 5 or 10 times each evening and before training, and you will build muscle memory that will help maximize your jump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WyRbdgdOt8

I have spoken about the correct position for your takeoff leg… here is a great explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ6QLCfAP0Y

Last one… I mentioned this video to a few jumpers – it really helps visualize the role of your takeoff leg as you jump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HspzxKXhpzk

High Jump Schedule Adjustment

Going forward we will be implementing the following schedule for High Jump.

Tuesdays and Thursdays we will begin jumping with the bar at 80 – 90 cm progressing upward.
  • If you arrive late and the bar is higher than you are able to jump we will not disrupt the jumping in progress to accommodate your late arrival.
  • If we have a large turnout, we will need to restrict the number of attempts at each new height to 3… just like a meet, to be fair to others that are waiting to jump.
  • (We may at times exercise some discretion on this if an athlete is working on a specific correction or attempting a new PB)
Wednesday we will begin jumping with the bar at 115cm progressing upward.
  • We have made this necessary adjustment to ensure our experienced jumpers are able to get in adequate training
  • There are so many novice jumpers this season, that by 8pm the bar has not gotten high enough to challenge the more experienced athletes.
If the track surface is WET… SPIKES are MANDATORY.
