Blake Sprints to Relay Gold for Canada

Jerome Blake of the Coquitlam Cheetahs ran the second leg of Canada’s winning 4x100m relay team at the NACAC championships held in Toronto August 10-12. Blake ran a brilliant 2nd leg of the relay and was rewarded with his first international medal. Canada was followed to the finish line by Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Early in the day, Blake was 5th in the 200m, narrowly missing the podium by 7/100 of a second.

Nathan George ran the race of his life to anchor the Canadian 4x400m relay to a fourth place finish. His split time of 44.67 was one the fastest relay carries in Canadian history. Canada’s time of 3:04.73 is the 2nd fastest time in Canadian history and the fastest time for Canada in 42 years.

Congratulations to our Cheetah athletes!

Parent Volunteers Still Needed For This Weekend

Thank you to some parents and younger athletes who have already volunteered their time over the weekend.

We still need many more volunteers. We are hosting the Province for this Meet and right now we have an embarrassingly low number of volunteers. Our club is responsible for this Meet, so we as parents are responsible for volunteering our time. JD, Midget, Youth, Junior and Senior parents please sign up for this weekend - Friday, Saturday and Sunday are all available.

These positions still need to be filled:

*Set-up and take down - 6 volunteers

*Hurdles Sat - 4 volunteers Sun - 8 volunteers

*Throws - hammer, javelin, shot and discus - 23 volunteers needed

*Long jump - 27 volunteers

*Pole vault - 12 volunteers

So in total 80 volunteers are still needed for this weekend and for this Meet to be a success.

Please email me with your preference for a volunteer task or visit the shed and sign up asap.

Thank you

Volunteers needed

Volunteer sign-up sheets have been posted in the equipment shed for the BC Athletics Championships Jamboree being hosted by us at Percy Perry Stadium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 13, 14, and 15.

As with our annual meet earlier this year, in June, we are asking for club members to volunteer in support of this championship for athletes from our club, locally, and all over BC. We ran a very successful Meet because of our parent volunteers; lets do the same again!

JD parents this is an ideal opportunity to help out as your child will not be competing so there will be no conflicts, thank you!

You will be provided with lunch and snacks as a thank you for your efforts.

Thank you,

Coquitlam Cheetahs Volunteer Coordinator

Reminder: Parent Volunteers still needed for Cheetah Meet!

Just a reminder that we are only a few days away from our annual Track Meet and many volunteer positions are still vacant.

Again, if you have signed up thank you and please be available throughout the day as help is often needed.

I just wanted to remind parents that we are able to keep our registration cost low compared to other sports and especially other Track Clubs because we rely on you to volunteer for our track meets. We do not take a deposit from you as a guarantee that you will volunteer but trust that you will do what is expected and needed! It is also a condition of your registration when you sign your child up to be a Coquitlam Cheetah that you will volunteer!

Currently we have 123 Cheetah athletes registered for our meet yet we still have approximately 60 vacant spots where there is no volunteer. Please take the time over the next few days to visit the shed and sign yourself up for at least a day! (If not the whole weekend ;-) )

Cheetah-Wear has Arrived!

The clothing shipment will be arriving to the shed Monday June 4th late afternoon and will be available for pick-up Wednesday June 6th and Thursday June 7th from 6:15pm until at least 7:00pm. Pick-up may even be possible on Monday once the shipment has been received and organized - families are welcomed to drop by the shed to inquire.

For expediency, please refer to the name of the person who ordered (and paid for) the clothing if different from the registered athlete(s).

Any clothing not picked up this week can be collected from the event admin team at the shed during the Jesse Bent Memorial meet June 9th and 10th.

Reminder: Parents required to Volunteer for Cheetah Meet

Our annual Track Meet is approaching fast and we are still in need of volunteers. Thank you to all those parents who have signed up already for the weekend Meet.

We rely on many volunteers to run our meet efficiently and effectively and as our registration is the largest it’s ever been we have many people to call on. Please take a moment to go into the shed and sign up for a volunteer slot on Saturday and Sunday.

Thank you!

Parent Help Needed for High Jump and Long Jump

Cheetahs need 1 or 2 parents on Monday or Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday to help rake the long jump pits from 7-8pm. Without help we will have to reduce the number of days we offer long jump so coaches can support each other.

Cheetahs need 1 or 2 parents on Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday from 7-8pm to help put the high jump bar up after an athlete knocks it down. Help to put the mats away at 8pm is also needed. (10 minute job)

Please offer your help. It is only a one hour commitment each week. All of our Junior Development coaches are volunteers and we need your help.

Sincerely,

Paul Self

President and Junior Development Coach

Brendan Wong 13th at Vancouver Sun Run

Brendan Wong ran brilliantly to finish 13th in a time of 30 minutes and 49 seconds at the 2018 Vancouver Sun Run. Wong smashed his old personal best of 31:37 by 48 seconds. He is a graduate of SFU and competed for SFU in both track and field and cross-country. Brendan was a Coquitlam Cheetah through high school and has returned to the Cheetahs as an athlete and is also coaching in our Junior Development Program. Congratulations Brendan!

The second Cheetah across the finish line was Sam Yeung who finished 5th in the male 16-18 age category in a personal best of 36:58. Sam also coaches in our JD Program and was followed across the line by coach Miranda Menzies who also ran a personal best of 42:30 and was 14th in the very competitive 19-24 female age category. Ariona Curiel finished 11th in the 16-18 female age category in a time of 49.31.

Well done distance runners!

The Sun Run is the largest 10km race in Canada with almost 40 000 competitors.

Practices for Junior Development athletes (ages 9-13) will begin on Wednesday April 4th at 6:15pm at Percy Perry Stadium at Town Centre. Change in room for Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The Annual General Meeting for the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track and Field Club will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 7:00pm and has changed from Room 4 to the Assessment Lab of the Pinetree Community Centre.

Members are encouraged to attend the AGM and use this opportunity to register their athletes in advance of the JD season starting in April. Although unlikely, if we experience the same level of growth in athlete numbers as we did last year, we may need to look at potentially capping registration (we can only have so many athletes running, jumping, or throwing at any given time).
